Marlborough Sounds

In our short time in New Zealand, we have made a point to venture to the far reaches of both the North and South Island whenever possible. However, most weekends find us in Blenheim and the doorstep of the Marlborough Sounds and an opportunity to explore its many wonders.

This vast collection of bays and inlets makes up 1/5 of the New Zealand's total coastline. And with over 50 reserves it is an ideal place to view wildlife, hike(tramp) and enjoy the water.

Some of our most memorable days out in New Zealand took place in the sounds. It is an incredible outdoor resource to have such a short drive away and an area we will truly miss.

The kids are always up for exploring the seashore in search of shells and sea creatures. Today Jack's efforts landed him a seahorse.

Governor's bay was a hidden gem. Everyone enjoyed the lovely hike down, the nice beach, the unique wildlife and the game of herding sea stars. A great way to spend a birthday afternoon!

Looks like Will will be onboard with celebrating his 9th birthday in a similar way too.

Sailing, boating and fishing are big in the sounds and Jack is game to go whenever the tide is coming in, going out or stationary. His good mate Max and he have been planning an epic trip to wrap up their time together. Luckily, the parent schedules and perfect weather matched up on our last weekend on the South Island and Max's dad Corrie, was able to take us out to the Cook Strait for some ocean fishing.

Catching a few parrotfish and measuring them against the records.

Whale Rock?

With views of the North Island, the Kaikoura Ranges and the Brothers Islands, even if we only caught sea perch all day it was going to be a memorable trip. Luckily enough the blue cod fishing picked up and the boys were able to land several keepers.

Near the end of the day, Jack was able to land his NZ white whale, a 60 cm Kawahai. This a fish he has seen on countless fishing shows and had as the top of his must catch list. I'm not sure who was more surprised the Kawahai or Jack.

Jack and Max have made a pact to meet up in Hawaii in ten years so they can catch up and catch some fish in the process. We imagine by that time this Kawahai will be around 90 cms.

Around the sounds, there are numerous swimming spots both fresh and saltwater.  The Pelorus River flows from the Richmond Range into Pelorus Sound and along its path there a few spots to take a dip. No promises on the water temperature!

White's Bay was another favorite spot of ours in the Marlborough Sounds. There was always plenty to see and do both on the beach and in the surrounding areas.

Sea caves, rock climbing and sand tasting all at your disposal.

Lots of Fantails at White's Bay
